Jerry cans fuel tank for personal use

Those who have never had a jerry cans gasoline tank in the garage ready for any eventuality? Nowadays a family has two / three or more vehicles and in order not to remain “dry” keep ready a tank is always a good idea.

But beyond considerations on the opportunity to have an available stock it is necessary to have very clear what the law says about the use of fuel tank approved.

Regulation

First of all the directives concern both stacking and carrying reserve which must be those approved and complying with EC Directives; the law allows us to transport fuels drive up to a limit of 60 liters, this is as set out in ADR in the international agreement signed in Geneva on the transport of dangerous goods by road. It provides that the carriage by private individuals must be for personal, domestic or recreational sports and therefore should not exceed the limit of 60 liters.

This agreement is approved in Italy by the Law 12 August 1962, n.1839, but the matter is also regulated by the Interior Ministry Circular it clarifies that the transport of fuel to the extent and in the aforementioned mode does not violate the paragraphs 8:09 to art 168 of the Highway Code.

Suitable Containers5-liter fuel tank

So we have seen that it is permitted by law to transport and store quantities of fuel provided in special containers approved, but what are these suitable containers as in the rules do not actually find the building material?

The tanks for the transport of fuel can be made from metal or plastic provided they have received EC type-approval where it appears the date of manufacture and the brand with the approval code.

Plastic jerry cans for petrol are lighter and easier to handle then their cousins metal tank and this allows greater ease of use and less effort in transportation.

Security measures

There are also commercially available tank that have the plug with retina flame retardant or the closing lock with pourer spout. All these features allow a safer use of the content and prevent fuel leakage into the environment as well as protecting the user.

Then there are small attentions in the use of these domestic products: not fill up to the edge of the tank, or not wetted the outside with the fuel, and finally not keep the tanks for long periods of time but empty them quickly to prevent prolonged storage as they are always highly flammable substances.
